General Enhancements in Version 9

Here are some of the most important general enhancements in ProActive DBA 9:

  • New Output Settings dialog provides a simple way to configure flat-file or repository output settings for SQL Capture, TimeLine and Database Auditor.
  • New context-sensitive on-line help for many SQL Capture and TimeLine windows and dialogs, accessible via the F1 key.
  • ClearType is used in most places in the Console, for clearer font rendering.
  • New self-monitoring features: Always On mode ensures monitoring stays running at all times; new notification types alert you when flat-file export filesystems become full, causing saving of data to get suspended.

SQL Capture Enhancements

In Version 9, SQL Capture includes a number of improvements to support higher-throughput capturing on popular platforms including Solaris, Linux and Windows.

Additionally, SQL Capture now lets you define a Global Default Template which contains preconfigured settings to be used on new servers that you register.

TimeLine Enhancements

Version 9 includes the following new features which are part of the TimeLine performance monitor:

  • New Thread Pools tab for Sybase ASE 15.7 servers using the new threaded kernel.  Gives a breakdown of CPU usage, context switches, etc. for user and system thread pools.
  • New monitoring and alerting of spinlock contention for Sybase ASE servers.
  • Supports gathering of XML showplan data in real-time on MS SQL Servers, with clickable link to display graphical query plans in SQL Server Management Studio
  • Process snapshots for MS SQL Server now include additional process performance metrics, including logical and physical I/O rates, cache hit rates, and more.
  • New monitoring and alerting of database filegroup space utilization for MS SQL Servers.
  • New monitoring and alerting of connection and lock resource usage for MS SQL Servers.

TimeLine Alerting Option Enhancements

In Version 9, the TimeLine Alerting Option includes new alert types and other features listed below:

  • New Error Log Range and Error Log Stack Trace alert types let you trigger alerts based on multi-line error log entries and server stack trace entries
  • Error log alerting and Blocking Detail alerts are now supported on MS SQL Server
  • Database Transaction Log Hold alert is now supported on MS SQL Server
  • New O/S process-based alerts (CPU %, memory/swap usage, etc.)
  • New filegroup space usage and free-space alerts for MS SQL Server
  • New DBSpace Utilization alert for Sybase IQ
  • New options allow alerts to trigger repeated snapshots, for gathering fine-grained detail about a performance problem
