News – Replace your Performance Monitor

Replace your Performance Monitor with
ProActive DBA

Posted: 2014-04-21

The economy is improving and organizations are gearing up to take on more business.  Your database servers will need to keep pace with the new challenges ahead.

So, isn’t it time you consider replacing your in-house monitoring or 3rd party solution that your company purchased years ago?  Performance monitoring technology has improved but not everyone has kept up.

ProActive DBA has always been ahead of the curve.  Last week, at ISUG-TECH 2014, we released ProActive DBA 9 which is light years ahead of the others. It’s the only Industrial Grade performance monitor out there.

Is your performance monitor up to the challenge?

  • Can it capture all SQL and logins with no-impact?
If it doesn’t use network sniffing to obtain SQL and logins, then it can’t capture all SQL executed on the server and it will add significant overhead.
ProActive DBA SQL Capture uses network sniffing to capture every single SQL and login executed on the server with no-impact.
  • Does it add overhead to your server?
When your database is at the edge of the performance cliff, your monitor’s overhead shouldn’t push it over.
ProActive DBA employs several techniques to monitor your server which results in a lean-and-mean monitor.
  • Could you write it?
The Sybase MDA and Microsoft DMVs were designed so any DBA could obtain performance data using simple SELECT statements. So, if your monitor solely relies on these tables, is it offering you anything you couldn’t write yourself?
ProActive DBA monitors using several techniques… To name a few: the database host’s operating system using Unix/Linux/Windows kernel APIs, SQL and logins using network sniffing which extrapolates it from TCP/IP network packets encoded in TDS, open and reads the raw disk devices on which the database data resides to identify fragmentation and space usage issues.
  • Any significant improvements in the last 5 years?
The technology to monitor databases has certainly gotten better. How about your performance monitor? Has it kept up?
ProActive DBA has made major improvements to SQL capturing, performance monitoring and added support for Sybase Replication Server, Sybase IQ, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle.
  • Will it be the “last man standing”?
If your monitor relies solely on querying the database server for its performance metrics, what happens when your database suffers from a big performance problem (i.e. outage) and queries to obtain performance metrics timeout or take a very long time to complete? Does your monitor display gaps in the data it collects? How can you identify the root-cause from a gap in performance data?
ProActive DBA is able to continue monitoring even if the database server becomes completely unresponsive. That’s the reason customers refer to ProActive DBA as the “last man standing.”
